According to UNICEF, the adult prevalence rate for HIV/AIDS is less than 2%. However more than 10% of all orphans are orphaned as a result of HIV/AIDS and 50% of the population is under the age of 18.

SOS Children works in partnership with UNICEF in Mali to support and help children. A Family Strengthening Programme was set up in the SOS Social Centre at Socoura in 2006.
